What is Segment 1?
Segment 1 consists of 24 hours of classroom instruction which is 12 class sessions, each
one is 2 hours, 6 hours on-the-road instruction, and 4 hours of observation. If you are
under the age of 18 you are required to take Segment I by the State of Michigan in order to
receive a Level 1 Learner's License.
HOW IT WORKS
State of Michigan requires students to be at least 14 years and 8 months old at the start of
the driver education class.
STEP 1
Sign up for Segment 1
- Student must have valid Birth Certificate, State ID or Passport to verify student’s information.
Students have to pass an eye exam - livestream or in-person depending on what you have sign up
STEP 2
It Has 12 Classroom Sessions Each session is 2 hours
materials students need to bring to the first day of Segment 1

STEP 3
After Completing the first day of class You will be able to begin Signing Up for your Behind the Wheel Drives (In-Car Lessons)
- Students must complete all 6 drives and 4 observation hours within 6 weeks of the class
beginning

Students Will Take Their In-Person Written Test on 12th Session
- In order to take test students must have minimally 3 out of 6 drives completed

STEP 6
Once recieve the Email Students Must Printed their Certificate of Completion Students Will Need to Go to the Secretary of State with the required documentation to apply for their Level 1 License.
- After visiting Secretary of State Students will receive level 1 license from the Secretary of State
by mail, please know that this license means the student can only drive with a licensed driver 21
and over
STEP 7
Students can Begin Driving with a Parent, Guardian or Licensed Driver Over the Age of 21 and Logging Your Hours
Michigan Supervised Driving Log
- Parents or guardians are responsible for making certain that their teen has completed no less
than 50 hours of supervised driving, with 10 of those hours completed at night. The 50 hours
may be completed with a licensed parent or legal guardian, any licensed driver 21 years of age
or older designated by the parent or legal guardian, or a teen certified driver education
provider. The goal is for your teen to be as prepared as possible for their Level 2 Intermediate License. - A supervised driving log must be completed and presented to your teen’s Segment 2 Driver
Education instructor to show that at least 30 hours (including 2 hours of nighttime driving) were
completed before beginning the course. - The log will need to be shown again to a Driver Testing Examiner showing that at least 50 hours
(including 10 hours of nighttime driving) were completed before the teen is allowed to take the
Driving Skills Test. - The log that follows and the free mobile app, RoadReady, are the preferred formats. Other
driving log formats will be accepted.the information may be printed from the app or shown on
the mobile device.
